Pottery made on a potter’s wheel

Already in early antiquity (2,300 BC) the Egyptians developed the art of pots made on a potter’s wheel and this technique continues to fascinate people. Spinning on a disc looks very easy to the viewer: it seems as if the clay takes the desired shape by itself, without much effort on the part of the maker. However, it takes a lot of patience and persistence to master this skill. The whole art is to control the centrifugal forces in the rotating clay by firm and constant pressure of the palms. Both hands are always used to shape and manipulate the clay.
